Knysna Marathon Training Diary: 1st Milestone

If you’re new to this, click here for the first (introductory) post. Basically, I signed up for the Knysna Forest Marathon which takes place on 9 July 2022. I have 9 weeks to train for this and only managed to hit 1km today.

Look, I am a very active person. I am on my feet 24/7 – up early and I only have domestic / household help for half day twice a week so I do an insane amount of cleaning, dishes, laundry, gardening etc. I walk my dogs every day (mostly twice a day) and I hardly ever sit down. RUNNING is a different kind of activity that requires actual fitness. I do not have the latter.

Equipment wise: 

I have a FitBit Charge 3 which I don’t really like. I gave it to my son, Noah. I still prefer my old TomTom running watch which I have had for like… 9 years? It has a built-in GPS, so I don’t have to even have my phone on me, have data, WiFi etc. It’s a solid little gadget with a big-screen display and actual buttons. They probably don’t make them anymore, but I really love it.

I couldn’t find any leggings with pockets in SA. I ordered a nice pair of black leggings off SHEIN that has long pockets on both sides. The pockets are actually longer than you can see in the picture and nothing moves / falls out. They’re skin-tight. I ordered a size M but could have taken a large as I have long legs. They are high waisted so nothing wobbles when you run. Nice.

I also have really cute pink, Bluetooth headphones that I got from my kids for Mother’s Day last year. I don’t like having things IN my ears, so earphones are not for me. I found a similar picture (of the ones I have) on TakeAlot. They have a built-in speaker, so I could take calls / talk to people while running but I mean I obviously won’t because no thank you.

Progress Wise 

I walk my dogs at a bunch of different places so I can go running training at Newlands Forest, Hout Bay Beach, Sea Point Promenade, Keurboom Park etc. We did a walk at Newlands Forest yesterday but I tracked my pace & distance to hit that first 1km at Keurboom this morning. FYI the BEST dog park in the world and also FYI my Border Collies are loving my training!

Obviously my pace is DISMAL. At this rate it would take me 3.5 hours to complete the Knysna Forest Half Marathon, and I need to get it down to 2.5 hours at a pace of at LEAST 6:30 min per km. I have a VERY long way to go (literally) but I’m so motivated (right now at least)

Every morning (on our commute to school) I tell the kids about the Knysna Oyster Festival. They went with me once before, but they were quite little. I’ve been 3 times and LOVE it. I mean: oysters & bubbly? What’s not to love. They do have super cool stuff for kids to do but haven’t released this year’s program yet – last I checked.

Food, diet, nutrition, weight

I don’t want to talk about this part yet. I weighed myself this morning and I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been in my entire life. Including pregnancy. I hate talking about this because I think it makes me sound whiney. The thing is that I am tall (1.75) so I get away with murder when I gain weight. I’m an amateur-professional at dressing for my body type with with flowy wrap dresses, puffy sleeves, high-waisted everything and cardigans. So when I tell people that according to my BMI, I am actually “overweight” they’re like nah.  Honestly though, I don’t mind having curves and I don’t think that I’m overweight… but I do miss having muscles.

The way I figure it, I’m going into a cocoon for winter. What see before you is a chubby caterpillar. Currently hairy, too – if we’re being honest.

I’ll talk about the weight stuff later, but I’m not on a diet and I am not going on a diet. I’ll start recording my weight loss as or if it happens, which I’m assuming would probably happen by default / accident.

I don’t think it’s an achievement to lose weight (I used to) and I would rather birth three children in a row than count calories, so we’re not going there.

What’s next

I’ll be running twice a day, 7 days a week. Even if it’s for 10 minutes, I’m gonna have to do it. I’ll update twice a week if any of y’all are interested. I will admit that I felt pretty good after this morning’s mini run. I don’t like gym, so this is it for me. I’m also pretty keen to play tennis with the kids. There are a few courts in my hood that have free access. Gonna get my ass kicked so bad.

Afterthought 

Remember how fit we all were in school? Sports every day, matches every weekend. Imagine that all just continued. Same okes you played against, same teams. Imagine you’re off to Netball or Rugby practice after work today? Someone needs to bring back extracurriculars for adults and all the gyms would die. RIP.
